The 34th Annual Chewelah Chataqua, an outdoor celebration of the arts, will start on Thursday, July 9 on CenterStage with a talent show and live music. The festival continues for three days of family fun on July 10, 11 and 12. An American tradition, Chataqua features quality arts, crafts, fabulous food, live entertainment on CenterStage, a beer garden, children’s theatre, a parade, a square dance festival, a carnival, a fun run, and various athletic tournaments. The event is free.

The Pend Oreille Valley Lavendar Fest dates are July 11 and 12, 2009. It will be held in Newport at The Park at First and Calispel (city park.) The website is www.povlavenderfestival.com.

The July meetings for the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society will take place on Wednesday, July 8th. The Computer Interest Group will meet in the basement of the Colville Public Library at 10:30 a.m. and will be exploring “Word” for the genealogy researcher. This will be the first of a two-part presentation; the second to be at the August 12th meeting. This class is co-sponsored by the Libraries of Stevens County. The afternoon meeting takes place in the meeting room at the Family History Center located in the LDS church on Juniper at 1:30 p.m. Donna Potter Phillips will be conducting a “TEST for Genealogists”. Conservation Northwest "Keeping the Northwest Wild" Hikes – Details and registration for the following hikes are at www.conservationnw.org/hikes09.
Grassy Top Day Hike: Explore a potential wilderness area home to elk, bighorn sheep and rare wildlife like grizzly, lynx, and bull trout July 11 on an 8-mile guided day hike south of Salmo-Priest Wilderness Area. Free.
Hoodoo Canyon Day Hike: Enjoy a 6-mile guided hike and a dip in Emerald Lake on July 18. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Free. Organized by Conservation Northwest.
Hike Abercrombie Mountain to Hooknose: Challenge yourself July 25 on a guided, 9-mile hike to this wild, remote region with panoramic vistas and the second highest peak in northeast Washington. Free.
Hall Mountain Hike: Experienced hikers are invited Aug. 1 on a difficult, 14-mile trek in a proposed wilderness area to the site of a former fire tower lookout at the 6,323-foot summit. Free.

The fourth annual Amateur Photography Contest, sponsored by the Friends of the Little Pend Oreille Wildlife Refuge, is underway once again, and all amateur photographers are invited to participate. Photographers who are interested in the contest should plan their photo shoot on the refuge before August 15 of this year. There are five categories in the contest: animal life, plant life, scenic or landscape, public use or recreation, and student. Prizes are awarded for the best photo in each category. In addition, selected winning photographs will be published in The North Columbia Monthly and The Statesman-Examiner, displayed in the office of the Colville Chamber of Commerce, and posted on the Friends website at www.refugefriends.com. • July 7: Canning season is here. Make sure to get your pressure canner tested. Testing is available at WSU Stevens County Extension, 985 S. Elm, from 11 am to 2 pm.
• July 11, 18, and 25: WSU Master Gardener volunteers will be available from 9 to 11 am during the Plant Clinic held at the Saturday Farmers' Market on the corner of Astor and Main in Colville. They can answer your gardening and insect questions. Drop by with your questions and please bring samples!
• July 25: Another opportunity to get your pressure canner tested will take place in Northport at the Northport Market from noon to 2 pm.
• July 28: Bonnie Stichart, WSU Food Safety Advisor, will conduct a free workshop called Pressure Canning Made Easy today. Learn procedures and techniques of canning, product selection, preparing and packing jars, and the do's and don’ts of using a pressure canner. The class will be from 5 to 8 pm at WSU Stevens County Extension in Colville. Call to register.
4-H Events
• July 6: The state-qualifying 4-H Fashion Revue will be held today at Community Colleges of Spokane - Colville Center. Judging for participants begins at 5 pm followed by the fashion show at 7 pm. The show is open to the public. Youth will model outfits they have sewn themselves and purchased outfits put together as part of the Creative Consumers project.
• July 18 and 19. Stevens County 4-H Horse leaders will be hosting a Horse Show this weekend in Arden. This is a performance show with western riding events on Saturday and English events on Sunday. Pre-registration is required. Forms available at the Extension office. This is a state-qualifying event for 4-H members.
• July 23: 4-H Dog and Cat project members are invited to the state-qualifying Dog and Cat Judging Contest today to test their knowledge. The contest begins at 9 am at the NE WA Fairgrounds. Bring a sack lunch.
• July 25 and 26: Stevens County 4-H Horse will host a second Horse Show this weekend at the NE WA Fairgrounds. Western Games events will be held Saturday and Sunday offers jumping classes. Pre-registration is required. Forms available at the Extension office. This is a state-qualifying event for 4-H members.
• July 26: Panorama 4-Paws 4-H club will host a Dog and Cat Show today at 9 am at the NE WA Fairgrounds. The show is open to 4-H members and non 4-H'ers. It is a state-qualifying event for 4-H members. Registration forms are available at the Extension office.

Interested in Gardening? Come join us, the Colville Area Garden Friends, on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. We frequently meet at local gardens during the summer months, gather for seed and plant exchanges in the spring and fall, design and plant for Habitat for Humanity houses in the area make holiday wreaths, travel on field trips to Spokane gardens, and host guest speakers. Investigators are needed immediately to advocate for abused and neglected children involved in dependency cases with CPS. Advocates help children in the custody of the state from "slipping through the cracks" of the foster care systems. There are children waiting right now for a CASA volunteer to review and investigate their case and speak up for them in court.
