Orient School announces a free adult computer class scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 from 3 pm - 6 pm. This class is a re-scheduled class from May 7th. This class is geared towards certified teachers, but is open to the public. Clock hours will be offered for certified WA state teachers. Please call the office at 684-6873 to reserve your space, as space is limited. The class will be held in the 7th/8th grade classroom at Orient school, computers will be provided. Areas of concentration for this class: WIKI spaces, THINKFINITY.ORG, and other basic computer functions. This class is offered through a generous grant from Verizon and facilitated by Stone Soup, a local non-profit. Saturday June 6th will be the 2nd annual Customer Appreciation Day at Meyers Falls Market. Join us for a day of fun! We’ll have kids’ activities, a healthy BBQ, & more! Meet our local farmers, taste our favorite products, & have a good time!

The 2009 Birdhouse Building Extravaganza will be on Saturday, June 13, beginning at 10 a.m. at the LPO Refuge Headquarters. Sponsored by the Friends of the LPO and Columbia Cedar, the Extravaganza is an opportunity for kids of all ages (and their parents) to come out in the morning to learn about natural history, enjoy bird watching expeditions led by local bird experts, have a free lunch and then cap off the day by building a great birdhouse. It’ll be fun, and thanks to Columbia Cedar, it won’t cost attendees a dime. Afterwards, kids can take their birdhouses home and watch the antics of nesting birds for many years to come. Summer Blast Off! June 13 @ the Fairgrounds in Colville. The day after school’s out! The five Centers – Places for Youth in Kettle Falls, Colville, Addy, Chewelah and Deer Park are sponsoring day of fun and games for kids and families – free entry. There will be Summer Games for youth, with prizes. Teams especially welcome (scouts, 4-H, youth groups, school teams). There will be food booths, dunk tank and in the evening a Country Luau with Silent Auction. Gate opens at 8:30 for breakfast, Summer Games 10-3, Luau/Auction @ 5 pm. Info 675-1495.

The Northern Music and Dance Festival is one annual showcase of local talent that should not be missed! The program, hosted and produced by Anne Marie Benedict, starts at 7:00 p.m. on June 13th at the Colville High School Auditorium. This year's performers will be Northern Ballet and Performing Arts, the Haran Irish Dancers, Jenkins High School Advanced Theatre, The Stevens County Stompers, The Larsens on Violins, Dan Clingaman and Susanne Griepp, Stazya Richmond and Thomas Hart, The Greenwood Institute d'Art, and Nancy Christopher. This year's event is a benefit for The Chewelah ARTS Guild. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available at Akers United Drug in Chewelah and R.E. Lee Shoe Company in Colville.

On Saturday, June 20, 150 years to the day, the Colville Chamber of Commerce and the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds will be celebrating the anniversary of Fort Colville with Pat Graham starting things off at the Ag-Center at 11:30 a.m. Come on down and pick up a map with points of interest to visit, including the site of Fort Colville, Evergreen Cemetery, and the Museum. At 2 p.m., there will be a rededication of the monument situated at the old fort site. After visiting these sites, head back to the Ag-Center at 4 p.m. for a more detailed history of the fort and displays of memorabilia.

2009 AAUW Garden Tour Announcement - The 2009 Hidden Gardens Tour will be held on Saturday, June 20, from 9 am to 4 pm, and will feature 5 unique gardens in Colville and Arden, WA. Tickets cost $10 each and will be available at Hedricks Nursery, Wynne Street Nursery and the Colville Chamber of Commerce, all in Colville, at the Meyers Falls Market in Kettle Falls, and at the Front Porch in Arden. Tickets include descriptions of and directions to each garden as well as a map. This year’s gardens offer water features, an owner-built greenhouse, and a rural garden enclosed within a horse paddock, as well as a compact in-town garden. Master gardeners will be on hand at some of the gardens. See what other people are doing with their gardens, and come away with ideas for your own!

The 34th Annual Chewelah Chataqua, an outdoor celebration of the arts, will start on Thursday, July 9 on CenterStage with a talent show and live music. The festival continues for three days of family fun on July 10, 11 and 12. An American tradition, Chataqua features quality arts, crafts, fabulous food, live entertainment on CenterStage, a beer garden, children’s theatre, a parade, a square dance festival, a carnival, a fun run, and various athletic tournaments. The Colville Valley Fiber Friends will host our annual Spin in the Park gathering on Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please bring your spinning wheel and chair, or any other fiber-related project, and your lunch. Gold Mountains Gallery is hosting a show featuring the art of western and wildlife artist Everett Russell in June. The show will hang from June 4th through June 27th and there will be a "meet the public" reception on June 5th from 5 til 8pm. Everett works in oil paints to depict landscapes, wildlife and nostalgic paintings of the old west. He has had work included in the Arts for the Parks top 100 and the Oil Painters of America Western Region Show. Gold Mountains Gallery is located at 852 S. Clark in Republic. Summer Reading @ Your Library! Summer is a time for fun, sun and…reading? Yes! Reading! Starting June 1st and continuing all summer long, kids, teens, and adults can sign up for Summer Reading at any library in the county, any time during the summer. Children can earn fun prizes, such as a free book; teen and adults can compete in a drawing for a free mp3 player. This year’s theme for Summer Reading is art. Local libraries will be hosting art events all summer long, including concerts by local musicians, workshops by local dancers, participatory shows by local actors, and even programs with local chefs. Best of all, Summer Reading is free of charge and open to the public. The June meetings for the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society will take place on Wednesday, June 10th. The Computer Interest Group will meet in the basement of the Colville Public Library at 10:30 a.m. and will be exploring the program "Clooz", a genealogy-type program that helps you to file and analyze documents, photos, and correspondence in an easy-to-find and manageable way. This class is co-sponsored by the Libraries of Stevens County. The afternoon meeting takes place in the meeting room at the FamilyHistoryCenter located in the LDS church on Juniper at 1:30 p.m. Member speaker Karen Struve will be sharing tips for finding family history information in institutional records. Our Wilderness: America’s Common Ground: Outstanding speaker and historian Doug Scott gives a multi-media presentation and readings from his newest book June 4 in Kettle Falls. The fourth annual Amateur Photography Contest, sponsored by the Friends of the Little Pend Oreille Wildlife Refuge, is underway once again, and all amateur photographers are invited to participate. Photographers who are interested in the contest should plan their photo shoot on the refuge before August 15 of this year. There are five categories in the contest: animal life, plant life, scenic or landscape, public use or recreation, and student. Prizes are awarded for the best photo in each category. In addition, selected winning photographs will be published in The North Columbia Monthly and The Statesman-Examiner, displayed in the office of the Colville Chamber of Commerce, and posted on the Friends website at www.refugefriends.com. Warblers of the Little Pend Oreille - On Saturday June 6, Warren Current, a respected local birder, and Jerry Cline, biologist at the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge, will lead a free morning trip for serious birders on the Refuge in eastern Washington focusing on locating approximately a dozen different warbler migrants and residents. Biologist Jerry Cline has a history of many years of research on the refuge and should have many interesting warbler stories as well as general habitat information. • June 5: Pressure Canner Testing at the Farmer's Market at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chewelah.
• June 6: The annual 4-H sponsored Fishing Derby will be held today from 9 am to 1 pm at Camp Princess Pine on the shores of Lake Thomas. We will host casting contests and the Salmon Tent will be available - which includes animal costumes and storytelling. The day is free to attend and will go on rain or shine. We have lots of prizes and some snacks will be provided.
• June 6, 13, and 27: WSU Master Gardener volunteers will be available from 9 - 11 am at the Plant Clinic held at the Saturday Farmers' Market on the corner of Astor and Main in Colville to answer your gardening and insect questions. Drop by with your questions and please bring samples!
• June 13-14: Summit Spirits 4-H Club will host a 4-H State Qualifier and Open Horse Show this weekend at the Arden Arena. Saturday will be performance classes and Sunday will be for Western Games. • June 18: All school age youth are invited to 4-H County Activity Day today at the Colville City Park from 9 am to 1 pm. We will have 4-H judging contests, dog agility (bring your dog!), make and take crafts, natural resource activities, shooting sports activities, and more. 4-H'ers can bring their record book questions, do a public presentation, and enter the educational poster contest.
• June 28: Panorama 4 Paws 4-H club will host a Dog, Cat, and Small Animal Fun Show at the NE WA Fairgrounds today at 9 am. Bring your dog or cat for a fun day of showing practice before fair season. Bring a sack lunch. For more information contact Jody Hoffman at 684.5977.
• June 28-30: State 4-H Teen Conference will be held on the WSU Pullman Campus over this 3-day period. Teen Conference is open to all youth entering grades 8-12. Cost is $125 if registered by June 6 and $145 after that. This is a great chance to experience campus life, participate in a career carnival, enjoy a dance, and attend some great workshops - many taught by WSU faculty. Workshops include things like GPS, paying for college, starting a business as a youth, fashion careers, and many more!

Interested in Gardening? Come join us, the Colville Area Garden Friends, on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. We frequently meet at local gardens during the summer months, gather for seed and plant exchanges in the spring and fall, design and plant for Habitat for Humanity houses in the area make holiday wreaths, travel on field trips to Spokane gardens, and host guest speakers. Investigators are needed immediately to advocate for abused and neglected children involved in dependency cases with CPS. Advocates help children in the custody of the state from "slipping through the cracks" of the foster care systems. There are children waiting right now for a CASA volunteer to review and investigate their case and speak up for them in court. With a group of well-trained SHIBA (Statewide Health Information Benefits Advisors) volunteers in Stevens, Ferry, Pend Oreille and Lincoln counties, anyone with questions about health care coverage options can get help. SHIBA is a program in conjunction with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner with volunteers in every county in the state. SHIBA volunteers answer questions about Medicare A and B and D, Advantage Plans, Medigap Plans, Washington Basic Health, health insurance fraud, dual enrollment with Medicare and Medicaid, low income subsidies plus more.
