Spring Dance Concert - Dances of jazz, contemporary ballet, and modern will be presented, as well as pieces for classical ballet and tango, in Northern Dance Theatre's upcoming show. The 14th annual spring show of Colville's NDT studio will be on Sunday, May 3rd at 3:00 p.m. on the CHS stage. Tickets are $8.00 and available at Happy's Hallmark or at the door. A dollar of every ticket sold will be put toward the start-up costs of an educational and performing company for Northern Dance Theatre.

Family History Conference Scheduled - Come to the 5th Annual Family History Conference at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 260 E. Juniper, Colville on Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will inform you of resources that will assist you in researching your ancestors. Shirley Penna-Oakes, a well-known family historian, will speak to us about “Tombstone Art & Meanings” and “Beyond the Internet”. Denny Blair, local real estate agent, will instruct us on “How to Find the Roots of a Home”. Classes will be offered throughout the day. We encourage you to bring your lunch. There will be a break but you will want to visit with the presenters and ask your specific questions during that time or take a tour of the Family History Center in the basement of the Church. Colville Community Blood Drive will be at the Colville Community Church (formerly United Methodist Church), Tues., May 12, from 11:30 am to 6 pm. The church is located at 930 S. Elm St., Colville. At this blood drive those individuals reaching milestones of 5, 10, 15, etc., gallons will be honored. Ducks Unlimited Banquet - the Colville Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual fund-raising banquet and auction on May 16, 2009 at the Ag-Trade Center (Northeast Washington Fairgrounds) in Colville. Summer Blast Off! June 13 @ the Fairgrounds in Colville. The day after school’s out! The five Centers – Places for Youth in Kettle Falls, Colville, Addy, Chewelah and Deer Park are sponsoring day of fun and games for kids and families – free entry. There will be Summer Games for youth, with prizes. Teams especially welcome (scouts, 4-H, youth groups, school teams). The Northern Music and Dance Festival is coming soon. This annual showcase shouldn't be missed. It starts at 7:00 p.m. on June 13th at the Colville High School Auditorium. Hosted and produced by Anne Marie Benedict, this year's event is a benefit for the Chewelah ARTS Guild. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and will be available at Akers United Drug in Chewelah and R.E. Lee Shoe Company in Colville.

On Saturday, June 20, 150 years to the day, the Colville Chamber of Commerce and the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds will be celebrating the anniversary of Fort Colvile with Pat Graham starting things off at the Ag-Center at 11:30 a.m. Come on down and pick up a map with points of interest to visit, including the site of Fort Colvile, Evergreen Cemetery, and the Museum. At 2 p.m., there will be a rededication of the monument situated at the old fort site. After visiting these sites, head back to the Ag-Center at 4 p.m. for a more detailed history of the fort and displays of memorabilia.

Greenwood Institute D’Art Workshops – Paper-making, May 4, 11, 18, & 25 from 10:30 am to 12 pm. Each one of the 3-week series will focus on the many ways paper is created and applied to artistic expression using marbelization, origami, and mask making. Paper Jewels, May 5 from 1:30 to 3 pm, 3 to 4:30 pm, and 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Handmade paper beads with acrylic coating applied to bead for strength. Design various necklaces, suncatchers, earrings, etc. Windsocks, May 12 from 1:30 to 3 pm, 3 to 4:30 pm, and 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Students will use nylon fabric for body of the project, shinny accents for various spinning of tail effects and streamers. Gloria Geary will be facilitating a workshop for artist members who think they might like to share their art with students by providing instruction, Wed., May 6, 5:30 – 7 pm. Books, Books, Books

Mushrooms are not only popping up outside but also in the display case at the Colville library. Come to the library and check out Jo Ann Groth's collection of mushroom related items during the month of May.

With the rising interest in organic and locally grown food, there is also an increasing interest in connecting the farm to the table. Chefs on the Farm describes the seasonal workings of Quillisascut Goat Cheese Farm, a small, family-run business in northeastern Washington State. There, owners Lora Lea and Rick Misterly started a "Farm School for the Domestic Arts" where every summer, professional chefs, culinary students, food writers, and others live and work on the farm. Meet Lora Lea Misterly at the Chewelah Public Library, Wednesday, May 6th from 7 to 8 p.m. for a presentation and discussion of her new book. Presented by the Libraries of Stevens County and the Chewelah Public Library. All Library events are free and open to the public.

The May meetings for the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society will take place on Wednesday, May 13th. The Computer Interest Group will meet in the basement of the Colville Public Library at 10:30 a.m. and will be exploring the program "GenSmarts," a genealogy-type program that works in conjunction with your genealogy software to help find answers to your research problems. This class is co-sponsored by the Libraries of Stevens County. The afternoon meeting takes place in the meeting room at the Family History Center located in the basement of the LDS church on Juniper at 1:30 p.m. Guest speaker Lethene Parks will be sharing tips for preparing for a research trip. The NASA traveling exhibit "Visions of the Universe" has arrived at the Libraries of Stevens County, Chewelah Branch! Come into the library to view the exhibit and participate in the daily astronomy trivia to win some great astronomy prizes. Then, join us for these programs at the Chewelah Public Library.
• May 9th, 11 am - 5pm. At this Saturday program for school aged kids, join Debbie Cotton of the Spokane Astronomical Society to learn about backyard sun-gazing and ..
• May 12th at 3:30, all school-aged kids are invited to join the library staff to learn about telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope; make a model to take home!
• May 14th at 7:00 pm is going to be a really fun evening learning about astronomy from local amateur astronomer Bill Betz. It's a great time of year to see Saturn, the Orion Nebula, globular clusters, galaxies and more!
• May 15th, 1 pm, join Joe Bruce, Solar Ambassador for NASA's Educational Outreach Program. A piece of Mars, a small chip of a rock from the moon, flown space shuttle tile, a rear and front tire from the shuttle, plus many other pieces of history from our space program.
• May 19th 3:30 pm Stevens County 4-H will be presenting the hands-on program "Rippin' Rockets" for all school-aged kids. They will be teaching us how to build balloon rockets that you will fly and race.
"Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery" is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the American Library Association, Chicago, Illinois, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The Colville Library Book Group meets every second Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m., in the meeting room of the Colville Library, 195 S. Oak, in Colville. Mark Harrison Memorial Fund – Donations are still being accepted by the Stevens County Rural Library District to purchase books in the name of Mark Harrison. Interested donors should check at the front desk of their local branch library.

The Kettle Falls Public Library Book Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 4 p.m. at the library, 605 Meyers St., Kettle Falls. The Book Bank at Rural Resources Community Action, Adult Literacy Program is open and welcomes you! Parents can come in and select from a wide variety of children's books to take home to their kids, and it's all free. • The Master Gardener Plant Clinic opens for the season, May 2. • May 6, Get a general overview of how federal, state, and local governments buy goods and services during an "Introduction to Government Contracting." • 4-H New Leader Training will be held May 9, from 9 am - 12 pm at WSU Stevens County Extension, 985 S. Elm, Colville. All new 4-H leaders are required to attend training within their first year of volunteering.
• May 14: Do you want to sell animal products at farmers' markets, but don't know the regulations? Then "Selling Poultry, Meats, and Dairy Products at Farmers' Markets" is for you. Learn about regulations related to the sale of animal products at local farmers' markets at this free workshop. Workshop begins at 6 pm at WSU Stevens County Extension, 985 S. Elm, Colville.
• May 16: Ground squirrel control, rodent control, and round baler education are the topics of the Washington Hay Grower's Association Spring Field Day. • Meat 'n Good Time 4-H State-Qualifying Livestock and Dairy Judging contests will be held May 30 at the Arden Community Hall and Arena from 8 am - 3:30 pm. Mycologist Jim Groth will lead a one-day mushroom foray on Saturday, May 16 on the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge. Emphasis will be on collecting morels for the table, but also stressed will be identification and ecology of all fleshy fungi encountered. Meet at the Refuge headquarters at 9:30. Follow the brown signs as you head east out of Colville on Highway 20. Bring a bag lunch, water, collecting bag (no plastic) or basket, rain gear, and wear long pants. Also bring binoculars if you wish°Xbirds and plants will be included for those interested. We should be finished by about 3:30 PM, followed by mushroom preparation and cooking demonstrations by members of the Slow Food Movement, Upper Columbia. Interested in Gardening? Come join us, the Colville Area Garden Friends, on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. We frequently meet at local gardens during the summer months, gather for seed and plant exchanges in the spring and fall, design and plant for Habitat for Humanity houses in the area make holiday wreaths, travel on field trips to Spokane gardens, and host guest speakers. BSA Troop 965 meets every Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Meyers Street Union Hall (blue building) in Kettle Falls. Boy Scouts is for boys aged 11 - 17. All boys are invited to join.
